On Saturday, January 15th, Northshore’s FIRST Robotics Team 1912 had their annual “Jumpstart Day”. Typically, during the team’s build season, Saturday mornings are devoted to creating their own robot for various competitions; however, this Saturday morning was different. Team Combustion mentored new teams from all along the Gulf Coast, some traveling from as far as Alexandria. Eleven teams came to listen to the advice of the NHS Robotics team and learn the ropes of robotics. The purpose of the “Jump Start” day was to teach the new teams how to assemble a robot. When the day began, Team Combustion split up into small groups to help out the other schools. They gave classes on electrical parts as well as programming. Mentors to Team Combustion gave pointers to other mentors and students as well. Jake Griffin, a senior, said, “It is nice being able to help out other teams. We call it “copertition”, because we are helping our competition.” Team Combustion’s community outreach continues all year long to spread the love of math and science throughout the community.
