A tremendous amount of community service has been done by the SOS Club at Brookfield High School this year. They worked hard as a group to finish projects such as the “Rake and Bake,” and offered service to the elderly to make the community a better place.

On Saturday, November, 11, they participated in the “Rake and Bake” along with a lot of the town. “During the day of the Rake and Bake, we met up at the church and then raked leaves at peoples’ houses. The people baked us pasta and soup to show their appreciation,” said Caroline Dahm, an active member of SOS in tenth grade.

They visited the elderly people at the senior center, Village Commons, and went back in December to decorate their Christmas trees, and knitted with them. In the same month, they baked goods and sandwiches and contributed them to the Dorothy Day foundation. They have gathered toys for the less fortunate children with AIDS,or with parents who have AIDS, and put them under the “giving tree.”

SOS asked that donations be placed under the giving tree to help unfortunate children. It was only placed in the cafeteria of BHS recently. Also, between the dates of Thanksgiving and Christmas, all of the participants of SOS have made special cards with cheerful messages and sent them to soldiers in Iraq. The soldiers were happy to know that the schools were thankful for them.

Recently, SOS organized a Valentine’s Day dance on Friday, February 9 for the elderly at The Village Commons. They donated cookies to the residents and participated in the dance.

Anyone who would be interested in getting involved in SOS, their meetings are held on Thursdays.
