The Kentucky Youth Assembly, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, hosted some of Kentucky’s brightest and most talented students. The KYA was created in 1946 and still operates on the constitution created by students in 1949 and modified by successive groups of student officers since then. It has become the largest youth-in-government program of its kind in the nation. The primary goal of the conference was to teach students the parts of government and impress upon them the importance of democracy and its everyday role in the state and nation. “Trinity’s delegation to KYA continues to improve every year,” junior Parker Lawson said. “It’s great as Y-Club President to see our guys experiencing KYA and performing well year after year. I thank the delegation for its hard work and look forward to a great KUNA (Kentucky United Nations Assembly).” Mr. Walter Mata, Y-Club adviser, said, “This conference had Trinity’s best delegation; our boys represented our school at an extremely high level. Many people were impressed by Trinity’s preparation, and I got several compliments from Y staff, telling me how Trinity participated and debated very well.” The awards Trinity took home were Elected Speaker of the House by Lawson; Outstanding Bill Award by Ryan Keeling, Cameron Murphy and Keith Wilson; Best Court Brief by Kyle Atcheson and Susan Draus of Sacred Heart Academy; and Best Speaker by Wilson. “KYA 2009 was a great experience,” Wilson said. “I feel like everyone at the conference was super mature. There were several extremely intelligent people from across the state. I look forward to the rest of the Y conferences.” KUNA is the Trinity Y-Club’s second conference, held in late March, which involves mock United Nations-style debate and the introduction of cultures from around the world.
