It’s football season and this year the Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) Patriots’ football team is more determined than ever.
They feel this season will victorious compared to last year’s, after suffering from a 3-8-0 record.
“I think this season will be better than last year’s season because we’ve been working hard, making sure our plays and drills are on point and working more as a team.” said Head Coach Jim Rose.
Hell Week was more like an easy week. Practices were simple, such as basic running drills, passing plays and defensive skills, but the team was still focused.
As they prepared for the season, they made sure everyone knew any position and was ready for anything coming their way.
“I believe if we stay focused and play every down until the whistle blows that the season will go well,” said Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) senior free safety player Chris Mitchell, in reference to the season.
On Sept. 3, the team won its first game of the pre-season against West Adams Prep,  16-7.
“I felt it was the first time we came together as a team and were willing to fight for each other.” said DPMHS senior o-line tackle player Daniel Williams.
Having won this game, the team has more confidence and is ready to make their fans proud.
“I was happy not just because we won but because we broke the trend of losing our opening season games,” said Mitchell.
Then on Sept. 9, the team played the second best team in the state, Centennial High School and lost 47-8. A few players were injured from tackles but nothing serious.
Disappointed, Mitchell said that all he can do about the game is play harder the next time, fix mistakes he made in the game and better them for the next game.
“Honestly, they were just better than us. Watching the video of the game, me and the team both saw that we made an incredible number of mistakes that cost us the game. Hardest game we will have this season.” said Williams.
The team said they are determined to take the school to City Championship like they did in 2008 and hopefully take BCCHS to State Championship and with a little more effort and support they will get there.
