The debate team clinched both the novice and varsity conference championships on Nov. 2 at East Kentwood High School.
“This year felt really good because we won in both varsity divisions, and we are a very young team,” debate coach Brent Green said. “It is always exciting to see students develop as thinkers and debaters.”
In addition to the team success, junior Zak Drabczyk claimed the Top Speaker Award in the varsity division.
“It felt really good because all of my hard work paid off,” Drabczyk said. “Ultimately, I wouldn’t be there without my team.”
Junior Morgan Schwing also won a Speaker Award in the varsity division.
“(Overall), we had a really good season for varsity and novice team because we are really good working together, and even though we didn’t go to a ton of tournaments because they got cancelled, the ones we did go to, we did great,” Schwing said.
The team was relatively young for a debate team and despite their age, they still came out on top.
“The lack of experience obviously has an impact on the work ethic and success; however, some have really improved and the team has come together,” Green said.
The team is taking a break before they head off to Michigan State on the weekend of Dec 10 for another tournament.
“We’ve been successful at many other tournaments, and we are still improving, so I look forward for us to do well,” Green said.
