Senior Alyson Dake has spent four years of her life at Shores but had yet to attend one of the most exciting experiences of being a high schooler…a school dance.

She lost her dance virginity on Oct. 28 when she dressed as a cowgirl for Shores Halloween dance, which was held from 7-10 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets were $5.

“Being with my friends really made this dance enjoyable,” Dake said. “Since it was my first school dance, it was cool to be able to go to something I had been hearing about since I began high school but never had the time to attend.”

Dake was just one of the more than 300 students who attended the dance that night.

“For being the first of it’s kind, it was a decent dance,” senior Justin Mickelson said. “The music was good, the energy was good, and the dance was overall a good time.”

Junior Brooklyn Sabin, though, was not a fan of the dance’s music.

“A lot of the music was old and unappealing,” Sabin said. “It’s a Halloween dance, and they played two Halloween songs. I did enjoy seeing people dressed up though.”

One of the best aspects of the dance for senior Rachael Harding was dressing up. She and senior Maddy Nygren went as nerds to the dance.

“(I picked a nerd costume because) I thought it would be fun to dress and act like I don’t normally act,” Harding said, “and that is one of the main parts of Halloween, doing something you don’t normally get to do.”

As for Dake, the cowgirl, the Halloween ball was her first but definitely not last high school dance.

“It was really fun to dance with my schoolmates and enjoy high school together,” Dake said. “It made me upset that I hadn’t gone to more dances, but I will for sure be going to more in the future.”
