The 2010-2011 hockey season came to an end March 8 at the quarterfinals vs. Kingsford.

"The season had a slow start, but we finished well," Sophomore Reed Hrynewich said. "I was close with the guys; the team felt like a family."

Senior Michael Bishop added, "I think that the team grew together very well by bonding with one another and picking up each other’s slack when one was down."

The Sailors lost 5-3 to Kingsford in Gaylord after taking a 3-1 lead.

"We just couldn’t put the puck in the net," sophomore Trevor Boyd said. "We should have used our teammates more."

The Sailors’ 3-1 lead came on goals by senior Nate O’Brien, Bishop and Boyd with two assists by senior Evan Adkins.

Hrynewich said, "We put up a strong effort. It was sad to end the season like that, but we played a good team."

Prior to quarterfinals, the Sailors won the Regional title with a 3-2 win over Forest Hills Northern/Eastern. This was Shores’ third year in a row of winning Regional.

"It was exciting to win," Adkins said. "We felt accomplished."

Shores overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring the games next three goals. Sophomore Austin Swiatek knotted the score at 1 in the second period on an assist by sophomore Tyler Bryant.

Senior John Skocelas and sophomore Gage Veltman scored third-period goals to give the Sailors a 3-1 lead.

Bishop appreciated the Sailor pride coming from the teammates’ peers.

"The most memorable moment was the student sections at our games," Bishop said. "It really makes a huge difference when we have our fans into it also."

The season came to a close at quarterfinals leaving the team with a record of 18-9-1.

Boyd said, "It was a good season, and I gained a lot from it. I think we all became better players."
