Wrestling coach Al Weber knows why senior Kyle Pawlowski was a champion for the Sailors at the City wrestling meet.

“Watch him practice sometime; he wants to win,” coach Weber said.

Pawlowski, the lone City champion for the Sailors, won the 140-pound weight class with a 3-1 win over Dre Lewis of Whitehall in the title match on Jan. 22 at Holton.

“It was pretty sweet to finally take first at city,” said Pawlowski, who placed second last year to Reeths-Puffer’s Jake Connell.

As a team, Shores placed third with 110.5 points behind Whitehall (249.5) and Fruitport (153.5).

“I was surprised that we were able to take third when we brought only 10 guys out of 14,” coach Weber said. “The team worked hard and did well.” 

Eight other wrestlers placed in the top four. Junior Zach Fields took second place while freshman Taylor McPhail, senior Colin Turnbow, and junior Matt Nowak took third. Junior David Balcom, freshman Adam Pawlowski, senior Tom McPhail, and sophomore Jacob Bordeaux took fourth place.

Pawlowski is a two-time regional qualifier and currently has only one loss on the season.

“He has a rare winning attitude and always wants to keep working,” coach Weber said. “

He and Matt Nowak have been coming in to workout and drill in the morning,” Weber said. “He’s very disciplined and has spent a lot of time this year working situations and improving his technique.”
