For foreign exchange student, James Chang, his transition to the states has been rewarding.
Chang was recently awarded the second viola seat in the Michigan All-State Orchestra.
A native of Taiwan, Chang is enrolled at Shores as a foreign exchange student.
"It is very cool to be in this top orchestra," Chang said. "Michigan has a great orchestra, and it is awesome to be in it."
This achievement is of high honor. More than 2,500 students auditioned to be a part of this orchestra, and only 16 viola players were given a seat.
In a couple of months, the orchestra will have the honor of being conducted by Gary Louis, who previously conducted at the University of Michigan. The orchestra will be performing at the Devos Center in Grand Rapids.
"James came from Taiwan and is very accomplished," said Tim Staudacher, Shores' orchestra director. "It is great to have him representing Mona Shores, and this is something he can take back to Taiwan as a honor."
