Once again, Carrie Helmer's Student Leadership class has pulled in the first-place award for bringing in the most points for the annual Canned Food Drive.

This event, which is normally a two-week event, lasted from the week of Monday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 12. In total, Shores raised 15,326 points. All food products were one point and winter clothes were 5 points.

The first place winner, Helmer's fifth-hour class averaged 254 points per person, and math teacher Kevin Terpstra's class came in second with 121 points per person. Each class was awarded a pizza party for its efforts.

All food products and clothes were donated to the Love, Inc. Foundation, which is a local organization in Muskegon.

"This year was the first year that we did the Canned Food Drive for only one week," Ms. Helmer said. "I was a little worried at the beginning of the week, but by Wednesday, the student body pulled together. It was awesome to see that, and this event was more than a pizza party; it is about the idea that we pulled together to help those in need."
