Starting 11-0, the Sailor boys’ bowling team made a run to the state tournament, held March 5 and 6 in Canton.

"I am ecstatic about the season," junior Nick Yadlosky said. "We ended up 11-3 in the regular season and won first place at the City tournament."

Besides winning the City tournament, Shores took second place at the post-conference tournament and second at the regional tournament to secure its spot to play for a state championship.

The first day of the two-day state tournament was team competition. Shores placed 15th out of 18 with a team score of 3,077 behind champion Mason High School, which had a score of 3,672.

"The overall performance of the kids at the state tournament was mixed," first-year coach Greg Schmelling said. "The team event was a little disappointing. But I told the kids that there are a lot of teams in the state that wish they could say they were 15th in the state."

The second day of the tournament was all about the individuals. Senior Chris Dempsey finished third in the qualifying stages by rolling a score of 1,303. From there, Dempsey lost in the round of 16 by a score of 402-393. Yadlosky placed 30th with a score of 1,109.

"As a team, I think we bowled pretty well. It does not show in the standings how we think we actually did," said Dempsey, who was named to the All-State second team. "As an individual, I expected to do better. It was a disappointing end to the season."

At the beginning of the season, Dempsey had one goal in mind: to win as many games as possible and go as far as they could into the post season.

"Overall, I am happy about our regular season record," Dempsey said. "I wanted to go undefeated, but I cannot complain about how well we did."

Apart from going to the state tournament, Yadlosky and Dempsey were named to the All-Conference tournament. For Yadlosky, it is his first time being named All-conference, but for Dempsey, it is his third year in a row.

"It is an honor to be named to the All-Conference team," Yadlosky said. "After performing well all season, it is nice to be recognized."

For coach Schmelling, it turned out to be a great first year. His second year looks to be promising when Yadlosky and other key underclassmen return.

"We had a lot of young talent on the team this year that are looking to come back next year," coach Schmelling said. "I am extremely happy about how are season turned out as well."
