The Varsity Soccer Colonels' season continues, adding on to their two wins in Ashland, by winning four more against Campbell, Scott, Boone County, and Dixie, scoring 11 goals and 3 against. These four wins boosted the team’s confidence, increasing their record to 8 wins, 5 losses.  Their next game at home, against the Ryle Raiders, did not turn out as well as they thought tying 0-0.
I caught up with senior defender Garrett Justice and asked him how he thinks this tie with Ryle will affect the team and their play. “I don’t think it was too big of an issue tying them, because we have big games coming up and this game didn’t even matter.”
Big games were right; the Colonels had to go down to Lexington to play top 25 ranked Lexington Catholic. The first half it was all Colonels, controlling the ball and the tempo, hitting the crossbar 3 times, but the second half was tough. The Knights of Lexington Catholic scored their first goal, then their second finishing the game with a colonels 2-0 loss. The next night they had senior night against Newport Central Catholic, in which it seemed like the Colonels did not even play the night before against the Knights, winning 5-0. The next week the Colonels had the district championship against Holy Cross, in which they won handedly 8-0, controlling the game and doing whatever they wanted. The win improved their record to 10-6-1, leading into their regional semis game against the Camels of Campbell County.

When pitted against the Camels, the Colonels rallied and scored another victory. Soon enough, they were the winners of the 2009 Regional Conference, taking down Highlands 1-0. The goal was scored by sophomore Sam Mullen, assisted by senior Matt McDonald. A similar occurrence was to next match, the first of several on the road to the State Championship. Followed by an increasingly enthusiastic cheering section, the soccer Colonels took down the Scott Eagles 1-0, with the goal again scored by Sam Mullen. Most recently, the team beat Montgomery County at Dixie this past week; goals were scored by Evan Talkers and (again) Sam Mullen. Brett Futscher has served as goalie the past few weeks.
In the State Semi-Finals against Louisville St. Xavier, the Colonels put forth their best, but it was not meant to be this year.  It was a sad time, especially with Coach Hertsenberg stepping down as Varsity Coach.  What a great run the Colonels had this year.
