Pranks aren’t all that they’re cracked up to be
Advertising

Pranks pulled in high school only boost ones fame for so long. After the buzz wears off, the dread of the consequence don’t.
"[Pranks] aren’t thought out in terms of consequences but thought out as a creation of fame on campus. They think they are cute and funny, but then their attitudes change when they learn the consequences and want to take back what they did," Assistant Principal Penny Parker said.
There has been a flare of pranks on campus, from taking golf carts for joy rides to gluing pennies on key locks. For the locks to recover to normalcy, the school must hire locksmiths. The money to pay for this, said locksmiths, does not come from the school and being a minor does not excuse one from debt. The culprit of a prank is responsible to pay for all the damages caused.
The severity of a punishment is based on the numerous factors that make up the prank. There are three main factors to decide the extent of a reprimand.
First, the knowledge of whether the prank was planned or spontaneous must be established.
Second, the "What if?" is applied. As in, what is the worst scenario, who could have gotten hurt, and how far could this prank of gone.
Third, one must reflect on what is currently going on around campus, like recent pranks.
A single suspension will not have a momentous negative impact on a college application but, that is only if one has a pretty spotless record otherwise.
Pranks can have a deeper origin than just wanting popularity. Students that feel shut out and ignored believe that they need to find themselves a voice. By attracting attention to their prank, they get some form of ack.
"Pranks reflect issues that a student may have at home. They are a way to expresses one’s self," Parker said.
Solutions to this problem could be the clubs provided to the students, like Peer Leader Uniting Students (PLUS), Student Senate and Associated Student Body (ASB). Giving them that voice is a vital key to the prevention of pranks.
"Sitting in the AP’s office, waiting for my suspension, I was thinking about what I did and I started to doubt if it was really worth the suspension," senior Oscar Trinidad said.
