Do you know who is looking at your Facebook page?
Seniors beware; some colleges are on the hunt for your Internet identity. Facebook seems to be the most common site that colleges are searching on. Many students around the country are being denied admission / scholarships because they have inappropriate content on their pages. This content could be pictures of drinking, smoking, or doing other illegal activities.
Senior Amanda Hickling is keeping her Facebook identity clean for this upcoming year. “[The best way is to just] keep it rated PG [on your Facebook page,]” Hickling said.
Senior Sean Landers believes that average students shouldn’t worry about it too much.
“I think that, honestly, a majority of students that put the incriminating photos up, don’t have to worry about it,” Landers said. “Because most of those students aren’t competitive students.”
While Senior Sam Yergin thinks it is all a matter of how secure/ safe your profile is.
“It’s having the proper privacy settings and not being naïve to who your friends are,” Yergin said.
Though Austin Hanzlik believes that as long as you’re a good student and manage to balance school and out of school activities well then your Facebook shouldn’t matter.
“I feel like it’s not fair,” Hanzlik said. “They should care more about what goes on in school rather than the outside of school stuff.”
Even if students aren’t competing for scholarships, all should be aware of what they are posting on their Facebook’s and who can see it.
