On Saturday January 17th, many students participated in a five-kilometer run to raise money for Christian Kingsley, a Mission Hills student who was recently paralyzed in a dirt-bike accident.
Participants donated $30 each to run, jog, or walk in three different races to support the former cross-country student. All of the money raised is going towards paying off Kingsley’s medical bills, estimated to be around $48,000 as well as additional costs that the Kingsley family has to pay as a result of the accident, like $3,000 to make their bathroom wheelchair-accessible.
Many Mission Hills students came to the event to support Christian. “We don’t even know Christian, but we just came to help,” said Victoria Van de Vegte and Chelsea Wenger.
There was also the presence of track team members like Alexis Cano who said, “I’m so inspired by this event. I’m glad to be a part of it, especially for my teammate, Christian.”
Others who ran were not as athletic, but they turned out anyway. “It’s the longest five-kilometer I’ve ever run, but it was worth it because I helped Christian,” said Kathy Morales.
This was only the first of many events that raised money in support of Christian Kingsley. On January 31, the Iceoplex in Escondido hosted a skate and concert from 8-10:30 PM with the proceeds sent to the Kingsley family. This event was set up by Christian’s classmate, Marcie Robb. Kimberley Mowry, a member of the Varsity Dance and Cheer teams, raised $300 from babysitting to donate to Christian. Future possible events include a night of performances by local bands at the Jumping Turtle, and a golf tournament.
Classmate Catherine Shinpaugh talked about how Chrisitan appreciates all the support he is getting from the community. “I know that Chris is really strong. My friend Kyle and I saw him at the hospital. His knowing that we’re helping him out has gotten him smiling again.” Let’s continue to help out Christian in the difficult times that face him and his family.
Any amount of money that you can donate for the Kingsleys is greatly appreciated. Contributions can be made through the website www.christiankingsleyfund.com.
