Mountains of snow in the parking lots - Chanel Cruz
Over the past two weeks, custodial staff at Eleanor Roosevelt High School worked continuously to clear snow from the parking lots and the rest of the school to make it accessible for students and staff.
During the snowstorm the majority of the county was operating under code yellow, meaning only emergency personnel have to report to work. The only emergency personnel regularly on site at ERHS is the custodial staff. Custodians had to report to the school each day that the students had off excluding the day of the second snowstorm. They had to be there despite the conditions to make sure the school was ready to be reopened as soon as possible. The school had to be clear before its official opening to the students and teachers on the 17th of February because the twelve month employees (security and staff from the secretary’s office) had to come in to work the previous Friday.
The custodial crew worked continuously and put in many hours to have sidewalks free of snow “between February 10th and 11th” according to Dent. “Even if the parking lot wasn’t done being plowed, we had to be here,” Mr. Dent, head of the custodial staff, explained. According to Custodian Mr. Hungerford, there was “too much snow and no place to put it.”
In addition to the custodians, some other twelve month employees had to come in for work as well. “I had to come in for some of the days,” said Mr. Cutlip, Security Personnel. Traveling to ERHS during the aftermath of the storm was difficult because “For the first week nothing was plowed.” Ms. Cox, only came in on Friday because, “I didn’t have my payroll in,” she states.
Due to the hard work and determination of the custodial staff at ERHS all of the parking lots and sidewalks were clear in time for the return of students and teachers on February 17th.
