Fall sports practiced all summer in preparation for their season, but now that season is coming to an end, here is a recap of the following sports: girls tennis, girls volleyball, girls golf, and boys and girls cross country.
Varsity girls’ tennis is third in league. The girls are currently 6-3. They have only lost to league rivals Cerritos two times and once against Bellflower. Other than that the girls have demolished the other teams in league. Top players this season are seniors Karen DeLa Paz, Kristina Dominguez, Krisa Ortiz and junior Angel Mae El Chico. They took third in league.
Varsity girls’ volleyball is currently 11-2. The Lady Soons have only lost to rivals Cerritos and La Mirada. The girls are currently ranked 2nd in league. On Oct. 27 they beat Cerritos, and on Nov. 5 they take on La Mirada. If the girls beat La Mirada, they will take 2nd in league, and if they beat both teams the girls will be tied for 1st place. Top players this season are seniors, Cydne Vaifanua, Kristen Taylor, Brittany Buffington, juniors, Dana Brown, Cristionna Pitts and Megan Fruhwirth. Coach Bos hopes to finish league strong and ultimately win CIF.
Varsity girls’ golf is 8-2 with both losses to Cerritos. The girl’s rivals are Cerritos, Bellflower and La Mirada. Since they have finished league they now look forward to CIF Individual Regional’s on Nov. 1. Top players this season consist of freshman Tiffany Whittaker senior, Jessica Turner, and juniors Vitiya Siripanya, Suttida Parnprome, Cheyenne Nation and Clarissa Sailer. Whittaker and Turner qualified for CIF, were named to the All-Suburban League Golf Team, and will also compete on Nov 1.
Boys and girls cross country has competed in numerous invitationals and two out of three league races. League finals will be held at La Mirada Regional Park on Nov. 4.
Varsity boys are ranked 2nd their league rivals are La Mirada and Norwalk. Top runners this season for boys are seniors Brandon Taylor, Francisco Escobedo, junior Caleb Vanderbaan, and sophomore Flavio Ortiz. Varsity girls are ranked 3rd. La Mirada, Cerritos and Norwalk are their rivals. Top girl runners are sophomores Amber Cornelious, Itzel Vasquez Rodriguez, Ariana McKenzie, junior Leanza Salas, and senior Jasmin Torres.
“We shall continue to improve with the intense workouts Coach Broomfield and I provide. We should be able to do our best come CIF,” says Coach Boppell.
This will be the first time both girls and boys go to CIF together since the 2007 season.
