The end of the first semester draws high school seniors even closer to the beginning of what many have selected as the next phase in their lives: college.

The choice to further one’s education can be a costly one. For this reason, the importance of applying for financial aid is stressed at Mayfair.

Counselors are presently encouraging college-bound seniors to apply for federal student aid by completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). While the actual FAFSA deadline is not until later in the year, students must complete the form by Mar. 2 to

be eligible for the CalGrant.

"At first glance, the FAFSA is as challenging as filling out a tax forms," says career intern Ms. Bowens.

According to Ms. Kameoka, the parent income portion of the application, which requires extensive tax information, is the most challenging for students.

"A lot of the [material] is stuff they haven’t heard of before. It’s especially difficult fot kids who don’t have their parents to sit down with them and explain it."

Ms. Miranda, counseling intern, says many students are also discouraged from submitting the FAFSA because they are not sure if their parents’ income qualifies for financial aid.

"Don’t be afraid," she says. "You can estimate it on the form. It will be verified when you start school."

The Career Center holds various financial aid workshops on campus throughout the year to help both students and parents with the tedious application process.

For information about upcoming workshops and further assistance, Ms. Bowens is available in the Career Center until 3 pm Monday through Friday.
