A senior can choose to leave early and have more time for homework, or they can come in late and sleep-in. - Megan O' Dean

(June 10, 2011) -- ecoming a senior, one is granted multiple privileges. After three years of waiting to be at the top of the school, when senior year arrives students are able to take advantage of opportunities such as leaving school early and having fewer than seven classes.

While having to take the required U.S. Government, English, and Econ classes, some seniors choose to reduce their schedule to the required minimum of five classes. “It was the best decision I ever made,” said senior Rafik Mughnetsyan, “but I still took more APs so that being able to take less classes balanced with the work load.”

With the advantage of not having to take on a full schedule, seniors are more capable to deal with the stress of filling out college applications, studying for AP tests, and completing their senior projects. “It’s an advantage because we have time during the day to get things done. Whether it’s homework or something else, it’s just convenient,” said senior Liana Babloyan. Being able to leave early gives seniors an array of different options on ways to use their new-found free time to do things such as go out with friends after school or take on internship opportunities for their senior project field work.

“The thing I looked forward to most about senior year is the fact that I had only five classes and left earlier than everyone else. It was so chill and I’m really going to miss it. Senior schedules is one of the things I really love about Clark because we’re literally the only school in Glendale where seniors get off that early,” said senior Alexa Lubrin.  With a shortened schedule, seniors are able to leave school as early as 11:20, or can even come in at 9:30 if they have a seventh period. “You’re really grateful for the shortened schedule on minimum day because most seniors have to be at school for like just two hours.”

The main issue that some seniors had to face was being able to get transportation to and from school with the odd hours. While most students are able to drive themselves, others had to opt to share a ride with friends or wait to take the bus home. “I don’t drive, but it wasn’t that difficult to find a ride from friends. Seldom would I have to take the bus, but I didn’t care, I just enjoyed leaving early,” said Lubrin.

Overall, the benefits of having less than a full schedule are one of the aspects that embodies being a senior. “After this year you look back and think how did I even stay at school until three every day?” said Babloyan.
