(June 10, 2011) -- Choosing a topic for a senior project is a right of passage for all seniors. Some go on wilderness adventures, some volunteer at local schools to educate the youth, and others perform in physical activities, by either picking up a new sport or conditioning their bodies. Senior Dion Banoian decided that for his senior project he would spend countless hours lifting weights and becoming a gym rat.

For three months, Banoian acted as his own personal trainer. He began by creating his own workout plan which was composed of three crucial aspects: cardiovascular strength, physical strength and flexibility.

Banoian then ventured to the gym and diligently worked while developing his fitness program. There he used the machines and free weights to increase his fitness on each of the aspects of his program while he documented his progress.

Although it may seem like he just wanted to build and tone his muscles for upcoming summer beach excursions, Banoian said that he has more long-term plans for all of his hard work. “I wanted a future career in health and fitness, so I just wanted to get a head start on it,” he said.

With the most crucial part of the senior project being the judging, Banoian felt that it went smoothly. “It was a lot better than the in-class presentations and the judges were really nice,” he said. “I actually had a sports psychologist as a judge so he knew everything about my project.”

After many hours of hard work and sweat, in the long run, Banoian said that his senior project really benefited him. “It got me researching and learning a lot more about health and fitness,” he said. “It also made me sure that this is something that I would want to do in the future,” Banoian added.

Unlike those who oppose the idea of senior projects, Banoian said that Clark should continue to have senior projects. “It’s a great tool and great experience that you can use to help you with your future goals,” he said.
