(June 10, 2011) -- Senior Jesus Hernandez leaves the judges’ room. Hernandez then realizes that he just finished his biggest assignment of the year: his senior project. With the project done, Hernandez’s senior year is nearly finished. Like many seniors at Clark, Hernandez said that he has suffered from Senioritis, a disease said to make seniors lazy and become less occupied in their classes.

“I’m really glad I got that out of the way,” said Hernandez about his senior project. May is a busy month for seniors, with both senior projects and AP testing. Hernandez said, “The fact is that a lot of people have been stressing out from tests and senior projects throughout all of May, and I think that everyone deserves a break."

Many seniors have already been accepted into the college of their choice, so the only thing that’s left is graduating. Most seniors in Clark choose to come in late or leave early to school, so that could also be a factor for Senioritis. “In a way it will encourage others to be more lazy, but it also gives you more time to work at home,” Hernandez said.

While some have let the Senioritis bug get to them, others are more resistant. “Senioritis exists in the minds of all the juniors, seniors, sophomores and even freshmen,” said senior Andranik Mkrtchyan. Mkrtchyan said that he did not become controlled by Senioritis and continues to work hard throughout the year. “To a degree, some seniors do have less work, but the work seniors do have less in makes up from the senior project and other AP classes they take.”

Senior Abu-Saleh Imtiyaj said, “Some people use it as an excuse for slacking off and getting lazy, but it differs from senior to senior.” Imtiyaj added that those who are infected with Senioritis mostly feel it after college applications and senior project presentations.

Juniors, sophomores and freshmen also feel their own version of Senioritis. “I think Senioritis affects juniors just as much as it affects seniors,” said junior Lori Kassabian. “It’s the end of the school year and we already finished our CST’s and AP testing, so the important stuff is pretty much over,” Kassabian said.

The end of the year seems to mark a significant time for all students to put less stress on work. Kassabian said that “right after the CST I realized there’s not even a month left and I don’t even have any major projects or assignments.” Towards the end of the year, students seem more disconnected, and even some teachers. “Since my CST testing ended, all of my classes haven’t had any major work going on in them,” said Kassabian.
