Dueling headphones: which are best?
Advertising
(April 1, 2011) -- In the latest issue of the Clark Chronicle, we reviewed the Monster Beats by Dre Studio headphones. In winter 2010, Monster Cable introduced a new model of headphones to the Beats by Dre line: the Pros. These headphones are listed for $449 on the official website, but you can find them at local Best Buy or Apple stores for $49 less. But what makes these headphones more expensive than the Studios?

The build quality of the Pros triumphs over the plastic construction of the Studios. The headband of the Pros is fully made out of titanium. This ensures that your headphones will not break, a problem many Studio users face. However, the build quality presents a significant downside: the headphones are too heavy. When I wear the Pros, it feels as if there is a huge boulder sitting on my head. So, when it comes to comfort, the Studios leave the listeners satisfied while Pro users will most likely cry due to disappointment.

Furthermore, the ear cups of the Pros are circular. I can’t wear these headphones for too long since the cups squeeze my somewhat-elliptical-shaped ears into a circular form.

But, when it comes to sound, it’s all about the Pros. The Pros deliver crisp mids and trebles. The bass is phenomenal: not too little or not too much, simply perfect. If you’re a music producer and you can afford to spare a couple of Benjamins, then these headphones should be your priority in the studio.

Also, Monster Cable introduced a new, re-designed cable exclusively for the Pros. This cable is thicker and more durable than the standard Beats cable. Not only is the cable long, but its end is shaped coiled circularly so that it can be further extended. Moreover, to insert the cable into the headphones, you must twist it so that they lock in place. This is convenient because the cable will never come out and disrupt your listening.

Last but not least, batteries. The Pros do not drink batteries. So while you don’t have to go waste money for batteries every few weeks (let’s not forget the fact that you paid $400 for these headphones), the Pros passively isolate background noise while the Studios isolate the noise electronically (however, the Studios need batteries to work).

Ultimately, I would rather listen to my music with the Pros than the Studios. If you have the bucks to spend, then the Pros provide a professional listening experience, similar to what Dr. Dre hears when he is working on Eminem’s music.

I love the comment "The bass is phenomenal: not too little or not too much, simply perfect." Beats by Dr. Dre headphones are a killer product (Studio or Pro) and everyone should own a pair.
