(April 1, 1999) -- Clubs provide the time and place for students to share common interests, build friendships and have experiences and memories. Although Clark Magnet High lacks the variety of clubs and activities of larger high schools, students have recently noted an increase in the number of clubs.

The students at Clark have managed to create a few clubs and activities such as the Christian Club (formerly known as the Bible Study Club), Debate Club, Junior Wrestling Federation/ Physical Fitness Club, Journalism, Key Club, Play Reading Group, Scholastic Bowl, Three on Three Basketball Tournament and the yearbook. Other clubs are on their way but have not yet received the ASB’s approval.

Clubs that are in demand the most are"music clubs like orchestra…and sport clubs," according to ASB Director of Club Relations Adrine Karibkhanyan. The Three on Three Basketball Tournament satisfied the students a little bit, but they still yearn for more "permanent" sport clubs and activities, she said.

Students grumbling about the deficiency of clubs should not sit back, complain, and expect a club to appear out of nowhere. The only people that can start the clubs are the students.

Then how can a student start a club? First, pick up a club application form in room 1322 and fill it out. Find a group of students who are interested in becoming a part of the club. Submit the application with the constitution of the club and a sponsor’s signature. Then wait for the ASB’s approval.

The recent club "boom" has kept students who crave for school involvement on their feet. It is a comforting sight to see students attending club meetings during lunch and tutorial since "clubs contribute to school pride and spirit." Karibkhanyan remarked.

The primary concern for a club, such as the Junior Wrestling Federation/Physical Fitness Club, is funding. Not having enough money for equipment and supplies, the club is starting a fundraiser.

Another fundraiser taking place is the sophomore class fundraiser. The sophomore class officers are giving their best effort to create the greatest high school years for the class of 2001 by planning activities and events.

At the moment, the main focus is on the sophomore class activities. In order to accomplish any activity, funding is always a question. For that reason, the sophomore class has started a fund-raiser by selling root beer floats and ice candies during lunch this week.
