(April 1, 1999) -- For many students, high school is regarded not as an institution of higher learning, but as a center for social interaction. After all, what do most people remember about high school years after their graduation? Certainly not the wonderful education they received (if any was received at all).

What stands out most in the average alumnus’s memory are the friends, parties/dances, and social life that they had (or didn’t have) as a teen.

Is this a result of the lack of appreciation that students have for education?

In some cases, yes. As we all know (only too well, I might add), school is something that is rarely taken seriously by kids, and is often viewed negatively.

However, this is not always true. There are many students who appreciate the value of a good education and recognize its benefits, while at the same time deeply enjoy the pleasures of social recreation.

Although socializing at school is, in my opinion, a key element in creating a healthy and productive learning environment, it can also become a distraction for students.

A balance must be maintained between a student’s social life and their professional life -- an idea that also applies to many other aspects of life in general. If this balance is not kept, then a school can no longer be considered a healthy learning environment.

We see the ideal class as being fun as well as intellectually engaging, which is an embodiment of the natural need for balance.

So what do schools -- and students -- need to do in order to achieve this ideal?

Well, for starters, students need to realize the importance of education and take the time to re-examine their goals for the future. In addition, schools should make a larger effort to create a more stimulating environment in the attempt to make education more enjoyable.
