(May 1, 2001) -- Students are being offered summer school classes at Clark and at their home schools in order to complete any credits needed to graduate or to take courses that will never be offered at Clark.

“Students will not be allowed to take any classes that are offered at Clark during the regular school year which would enable them to take an AP course or honors course relating to that subject,” counselor Rebecca Angulo said during one of her announcements to Ira West’s AP U.S. History class.

According to Angulo, students who took classes last summer in order to get into an AP class during the school year have not fully succeeded in their AP class this year. Thus, Angulo and the school administration decided to only allow summer classes to those students who have failed during the school year and to those who want to pursue classes that will not be offered at Clark during the year.

Even though classes are being offered at Crescenta Valley, Glendale and Hoover, seats are limited and students from Clark are not given the same chance of getting enrolled into their classes for the summer. Therefore, applications must be turned in earlier or on time in order for students to be given a chance to get enrolled in a class. Glendale and Hoover applications were already offered in the counselors’ office and CV and Clark’s will be available later on the spring.

However, there are other opportunities for summer school other than high school courses. Glendale Community College also offers courses to high school students within the district. With the approval of Angulo and a parent’s signature, high school juniors and seniors of 2001-2002 may enroll in summer school courses at GCC. Applications are available in the counselors’ office and were also sent to next year’s juniors and seniors. According to some juniors, summer school courses at GCC seem more challenging and fun than high school courses.

“I decided to take summer school courses at GCC instead of Clark and CV because I feel like it would not only be a good chance to study something new and different, but also because it would help me to adapt to college, “which I’ll be facing soon,” said junior Praise Lee.
