From April 25 through  Thursday, freshmen, sophomores and juniors took their SAT9 test. During this time, seniors worked on their senior projects.  The SAT9 scores are analyzed and schools are given an Academic Performance Index (API) ranking.  Out of 1000, Clark had an API of 771 in 1999 and 786 in 2000, leaving Clark with the highest API  of all  high schools in the GUSD.

According to librarian Susan Newcomer, the California State Legislature uses the SAT9 scores as a school accountability to reflect how much education students receive at school and measure  student knowledge of various subjects.

“In the past two years of testing, Clark’s diverse student body has done well on the SAT9 tests and has shown improvement in a number of areas,” said librarian Susan Newcomer.

Seniors will turn in the second to last phase of their senior project portfolios today. The portfolio encompasses the self-selected senior project the student chose. According to English teacher Diana Connley, this portfolio is for the senior project and it will benefit the students for their future résumés and applications. On June 2, “Oral Board Day,” seniors will orally present their final production of this yearlong project. A four-person panel consisting of parents, teachers or community business partners will judge the presentation. The presentation is 15 minutes, with five minutes for questions from the panel.

There will be an all district Lion’s Club poetry contest held May 29 at Hoover High School  from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Students who wished to participate submitted their poems to their English teachers today. The topic of the poem is about acceptance and tolerance.
On April 17, Clark’s Poetry Club sent two teams of students to take part in the annual San Gabriel Poetry Contest. The first team had sophomore Marine Sarkisian, freshman Arin Khoclaverdian and sophomore Gina Varsh. The second team had sophomore Narine Panosian, junior Jenny Schellbach and sophomore Sarah Iakimova. These two teams competed against Arcadia High School and St. Lucy’s Priory of Glendora in HIT’s Fine Art Connection in Alhambra.

St. Lucy’s Priory came in first place, winning $100. Arcadia High came in second and third place, winning $50 and $25, respectively. Clark came in fourth place. “I felt nervous but I did okay. I could have done better. I think everybody we sent from Clark did very well,” said Panosian, the club’s president.

“I feel that our team did very well due to the quality of the poems,” commented Khoclaverdian. Poetry Club advisor Maral Guarino said, “I was so impressed that the real Clark poets came all the way to Alhambra to bare their souls.”

Close to 300 students attended Friday’s freshmen-sponsored “Spring Fling” dance. DJ David A. Palomares, was hired by KIIS-FM,   the dance sponsor.  During the dance, KIIS-FM was to raffle off $1,000 scholarships. However, “complications occurred and [the raffle] was canceled,” said ASB advisor Kristina Provost. “It was a great time to celebrate spring’s arrival and we were really excited to have a KIIS-DJ with us,” freshman vice-president Alek Bartrosouf said.
