(May 31, 2001) -- The fourth annual ASB and class elections were held this month. However, unlike the previous three years, only twelve people ran for the eight positions this year.  The only competition among the eight ASB office positions was between the positions for the ASB president and vice-president.

Next year’s Director of Club Relations Melineh Dereghishian, a candidate who had no opponents, said, “I think it’s better to have one person run that cares about the position rather than ten people who don’t.”

In the class elections, more candidates ran per position, so students had more choices.  Armen Mnazakanyan, next year’s sophomore vice-president said that the competition was difficult because all the candidates were qualified.

According to ASB advisor Kristina Provost, there were fewer people running for ASB offices because students wanted to run for their class offices. Junior Albert Chun, who has been ASB director of technology for three years, said, “There was a fear of losing, and many did not want to run against friends.”

The elected members do not take office until next year, yet they have already begun to plan activities.  “Some ideas are having a carnival and more dances,” re-elected director of finance, junior Vagarshak Ovakyan said.  Also according to Provost, the new ASB and administration will work together to organize events.
