Clark’s Grad Night will take place in Marina Del Rey  Monday, June 18, a night before graduation. For $72 a ticket, seniors will spend their night on a yacht from 12:30-4:30 a.m. According to senior advisor Chris Axelgard, the first floor of the yacht will be the karaoke room, the second floor will be for dancing and the third floor will be a full buffet. Hoover High School will also be spending their Grad Night with Clark. Transportation will be provided via bus from Clark and Hoover to Marina Del Rey. They will leave at 9:30 p.m. and return at 5 a.m.

Graduation for the Class of 2001 will take place June 19 in the amphitheatre. According to senior advisor Stephanie Sajjadieh, who has been coordinating the graduation along with principal Doug Dall and assistant principal Joan Shoff, the graduation will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through the reception that follows. Seniors will not have any classes that day due to the graduation. Each senior will receive six tickets. Left-over tickets will be available for those wanting extra tickets through a random lottery.

Yearbooks and yearbook supplements will be distributed  June 11-13 in room 1329. According to yearbook editor-in-chief Joy Lee, both yearbooks and yearbook supplements will be on sale for those who still need to purchase them. Yearbooks will be sold for $50 with an ASB card and $55 without; the supplement will be $3. This year the yearbook will feature digital pictures, more color pages and an index, according to Lee. June 13 will be the last day yearbooks will be on sale at the original price of $45 with an ASB card and $50 without. Lee also said that students should reserve their copy of the yearbook, as supplies are limited.

The winner of the Debate Club’s first-ever debating tournament, which began on May 10 and concluded Tuesday, was the team of Elaine Myung and Jane Park.  Members of the club, alone or in pairs, debated against each other about whether Timothy McVeigh’s execution should be televised.  Each member had to research the topic ahead of time and was given a “for” or “against” position right before their debate.

The debates followed a special format with opening statements, both sides’ arguments, cross-examinations and closing arguments.  Each member earned up to ten points in categories like persuasiveness, presentation and how articulate and informative their arguments were.  The groups or individuals with the highest scores went on to compete against each other in the final round this Tuesday.

Club president Sarang Kim, who judged the debate along with senior coach Michael Fierro, said they spent the past three years preparing for actual debates by learning the basics and doing practice debates.  “We hope this experience will prepare the members for future debates, hopefully with other schools,” Kim said.
