Move to the beat and show off your dance skills at the first dance of the year being held today from 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Halloween dance will take place today in the auditoria and will be decorated by its sponsor, ASB. Decorations will consist of spider webs and other ghoulish goods. The dance will feature a professional DJ. The money raised through the dance will be used to fund ASB and also to help the freshman class kick off their new year.

ASB and TUPE are taking anti- drug campaigns “to its limits” during Red Ribbon Week, according to TUPE adviser Judy Sanzo. Trees and rails have been adorned with red ribbons and students have been encouraged to wear red wristbands throughout the week to promote the anti-drug campaign. A poster contest continues where the winning poster will be hung in all schools within the District and the Healthy Kids survey will be held around campus.

Sanzo said that TUPE and ASB are working together to try to get the word out about how rave drugs, tobacco and alcohol are detrimental to students’ health. To demonstrate the effects of such drugs, a presentation comparing a healthy lung to a smoker’s lung will also be shown during the week. Sanzo added that Red Ribbon Week has been designed to encourage teens to get the best of life without the use of drugs ASB President Eddie Cherkezian said that Red Ribbon Week has fulfilled its task “as long as students acknowledge the dangers of drug-involvement.”

Conservationists demonstrate against deforestation as land is being cleared for the expansion and construction of a ski lodge, a fire breaks out at the construction site, and the state accuses a man named Syd Price for arson. It is up to the Mock Trial team to either play the role of the defense and prove Price “not guilty” or support the prosecutor and charge him as being guilty of the crime.

It will be Clark’s fourth year competing in the LA County Mock Trial competition. With the help of advisers Melanie Martin, Chris Davis and Michael O’Gara, the 18 members involved in the team are preparing for the competition on Nov. 1 and 8.

The team meets every Tuesday and Thursday, playing the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs or clerks to prepare for the actual trial. The team was given a packet of materials that describes a fictional criminal case and was given the task to either play prosecution or defense. Not only are students participating in the team by practicing certain roles, junior Lily Melikian and senior Marnette Federis are also contributing by acting as courtroom artist and journalist.

“Like every year,” Davis said, “I want the members to feel they put in their best effort.”
