I recently read your article “Students Protest in Silence,” featured in the November issue of the Chronicle. Though I am personally pro-abortion, I appreciate the respect with which you treated the protest, and I applaud those who took part in the demonstration.

It is disheartening to see that people such as those who were messing with the protesters acted so immaturely in regards to such an important topic. Abortion is not a laughing matter, and when students are going to take a stand for their beliefs and values in this manner, others should at least have the decency to respect them and allow them to operate unmolested. Harassing them only shows childishness and perhaps narrow-mindedness, which are disappointing qualities in a high-school student.

Those who took displayed their beliefs and took part in the protest, on the other hand, should be commended for their involvement. In the words of the famous thinker Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it;” we should all be able to express our views, whatever they may be, whomever they may offend. Silence is a powerful tool, and there are many who have fallen in love with the sound of their own voice that would do well to remember that.

Demonstrations of this nature should definitely be encouraged. Getting students to express themselves in this manner would be interesting, and could serve as a great learning experience as well. Writing an article was a good way to bring extra attention to an event that too many people ignored or simply didn’t care about.

November’s edition of Clark Chronicle was a big success to the students who read it. I for one enjoyed reading many of the articles, much like the sports section of the newspaper.

The dodgers, which was the team I was a part of, was mentioned in the newspaper and our success at the championship a few weeks ago was announced throughout Clark. Hearing this sort of news made me wonder if my name or all our team’s individual names were even mentioned in the Chronicle.

I was really glad to see that our team itself was mentioned; yet I wondered why only two of our team members were mentioned in the article instead of the whole team. I am, without a doubt, proud of Douglas Centeno’s contributions to the games and Randi Robin’s final hit. I really hoped though that all ten of our teammates’ names could at least be located somewhere in the article, depicting the whole unit of our softball team.

I really hope you will take in consideration to more detail in the stories you will post up in your newspapers, such as the whole softball team in my case. Thank you for taking the time for listening to my ideas and hopefully they will benefit your stories in the future.

Sincerely yours,

I am writing on the recent article in the Clark Chronicle about vegetarianism.  I am a vegetarian and have been for about four years now and I have some advice for people becoming vegetarian.

Like Andrea Lau said, you need to get protein from other sources like from legumes since there will no longer be meat in your diet.  I have found that one must plan their meals throughout the day.

For instance if you have cereal for breakfast, a bag of chips for lunch and pasta for dinner that is no good because you would not get enough protein. Instead of chips you could have a bean burrito or instead of cereal you could have eggs.

Of course, if this is still not enough then you need to take supplements.  Everyone’s body is different so you may never need to use supplements like me. I hope this advice will help some of you on the road of vegetarianism.

Sincerely,
Dillen Maurer

I've been vegetarian for 6 years and adding to Dillen, don't take supplements that have gelatin and be sure to research products that do not contain parts of animals such as pectin and rennet. A lot of vegetarians aren't cautious of this because they think it's vegan related, which it is not. Also, be sure to buy your eggs organic and cage free if you do eat eggs.
