At-a-glance

Michael Jackson has competition Michael Jackson has competition

(November 6, 2009) -- I’m completely biased when it comes to Michael Jackson. I used to always think it’s absurd that many musicians now-a-days try to remake his music, because it is almost impossible to make it any better than it already is. Whether it’s covering his songs or just simply remixing it with their techno beats, his music is constantly being changed in some way.

There is no need for musicians to take one of his songs and do a 360 spin on it thinking it’ll make it better. Most of the time, it does the exact opposite. Jackson can’t be replaced, and it’s a bit pathetic that musicians are using his music as a “ticket” into fame. If you can’t make your own music and aren’t any good at remaking a classic, should you really be considered a musician? I think not. There’s a reason he was given the title “King of Pop.” He knew what the best way to produce his music was and exactly which style he wanted to use.

Therefore, if there is a cover, remake or anything of that sort of one of Jackson’s songs, I have almost always turned a blind eye to it. I felt no reason to corrupt my poor ears with yet another failure of a perfectly fine song. Recently, however, I came across a cover Imogen Heap did of Michael Jackson’s most famous song, “Thriller."

If anything, her cover deserves a thumbs up, two thumbs up if you consider the fact that she sang it live without any of those nonsense fillers producers add in the recording studio. She took a classic and redid it so fantastically that someone as biased as me listened to it over a dozen times in the 24 hours after the first click. While Jackson’s has that actual creepy feel to it, Imogen Heap’s version is slowed down and is just the right speed for a lullaby. In fact, it would be exactly what I’d want to listen to on repeat as I drift to sleep after a long night of studying.

There is always room for change. Although Jackson will never be forgotten as one of the world’s greatest musicians, for once, I think there might actually be a match for him. But then, after careful consideration, I remember why Michael Jackson wins. He is the King of Pop and he always will be. He wins. The end.
