At-a-glance

(November 5, 2009) -- On Nov. 3, sophomore Randi Robins firmly held the bat, focusing her eyes on the upcoming pitch. As the pitcher tossed the ball, Robins took a big swing. The bases were loaded, and every player ran for the next base as the ball flew in the air.

As Robins hit the ball, sophomore Douglas Centeno was on the third base and ran for home. Students on the bleachers and his teammates cheered him on, as he finally reached home base and ensured their victory. "We were determined to win this year because last year we lost the championship to the same team," Centeno said. "So taking it back felt great." The final score was 6-5, breaking the tie in favor of the Dodgers.

After two weeks of play during enrichment, the Dodgers and Yankees had made it to the finals. To be the champion, either team had to win two out of three games.

The Dodgers won the first game, 9-1. The second game concluded in a tie, 5-5, but due to insufficient time the Dodgers were not able to play their last inning.

The game was continued, and one run determined the Dodgers’ victory. "We have been working hard the entire season and we have had some disappointing games, but it is nice to know we pulled it together," said Robins, whose swing broke the tie. Softball trophies for first, second and third place will be distributed soon.

The Annual Softball World Series season began with nine teams and 90 players. In order to participate, these teams had to have at least two female players each. According to the coordinator of intramurals, P.E. teacher Judy Thomsen, this specific requirement is aimed to recruit female players so a female league can be established in the future.

Thomsen believes that intramurals is an experience which will prepare students for the real world. It teaches them how to balance their schedules and learn to notify others of changes ahead of time in order to avoid conflicts—in this case, canceled games. "This season was anti-climatic, but every year is different," Thomsen said.
