Animals need rescue from shelters
Advertising
(May 5, 2003) -- I prepared a lighter topic for this issue of the newspaper (not to say that lighter means less important.)

Animals have always been an integral part of my life. Some of you can probably relate; others might not.

When I turned thirteen, the dog that was dubbed “mine” passed away. Button was a good dog who ate things she shouldn’t have and hadn’t the slightest clue how to swim. I went companionless for a while during which my mom had the company of Button’s daughter, Jellybean. Jellybean eats only the finest in human food, knows how to swim, and dislikes me very much (Yorkshire terriers are traditionally loyal to only one person in the house and usually it is a female).

My recent encounter with animals is the reason why I implore you: if you are looking for a pet, do so at your local animal shelter. Shelters are home to many unwanted or stray animals that, for the most part, want nothing more than a consistent meal and a warm place to sleep. If you visit often, there is a great chance you’ll find an animal that suits your needs and will be the perfect companion to your home.

The best part about adopting an animal from the shelter is the animal’s attitude. I’d bet that the animal, whether it is a dog, cat or rabbit, knows it was rescued and will be eternally grateful for that.

In fact, my new little adopted friend is sitting on my feet as I type these words.

So it’s with this small piece of advice that I welcome my own man’s best friend in to my home once again: my new dog, Roxie.
