(November 26, 2003) -- Since the departure of counselor Rebecca Angulo, sophmores and juinors have not had a full-time counselor.  Assistant Principal Joan Shoff said that there is not yet a conclusion by the school and district on when there will be a new counselor. “We will get one, I just don’t know when," Shoff said.

For the interim, students have filled out ‘requests to see a counselor’ slips, which have been answered by appropriate staff such as Principal Doug Dall, Shoff and school psychologist Christine Karg.

Angulo said she saw a flyer about a new job in the district created by a new grant called the Elementary Counselor Grant.  She was interested and eventually got the job.  Shoff said she thought that Angulo’s Hispanic background and knowledge of Spanish will be useful in the south Glendale area where she is working.  Angulo splits her time between Thomas Jefferson and Columbus Elementary Schools.

Angulo came to Clark in 1998 as a counselor and history teacher.  Prior to Clark, she taught history at Wilson Middle School for 12 years.   She said that it was a hard decision to leave and that she someday hopes to return to Clark.

Angulo said that in her new job she helps students get ready for middle and high school.  She will give students career info, help with personal or social problems, take them on field trips, introduce them to career people, help them with study skills and work with them individually on their reading.    Angulo noted that “some of these kids will eventually end up at Clark… so, in a way, I’m still helping Clark.”

Shoff commented that this grant was an important new program for the district.  She said that before this new grant, the old program said that students need a counselor starting in middle school.  This idea’s not true  Shoff said. She says thst Elementary students need counseling as well.  Dall said that “elementary school counseling has [not typically] been an area where [there have been] counselors.”
