(November 26, 2003) -- What sounds more appealing? A nice clean solid color shirt or one faded with a damaged logo and ripped lining. With the change in fashion trends, the second shirt is more attractive. That ripped and faded look is now referred to as “vintage.”

“Well, when I hear vintage I usually think of the ‘70s, faded torn clothing, usually the earthy tone colors,” says junior Carol Shin.

Vintage describes clothes from past eras such as the ‘50s and ‘60s and even the ‘90s. Vintage items usually come with faded colors and other signs of wear and tear that come with age.

Although vintage clothing comes from the past and are often secondhand items, clothing labels have been able to bring a little vintage touch to new items. Hollister has a pair of jeans named “Zuma Vintage Destroyed Boot” and, like the name suggests, it comes with faded color, rips and loose thread, everywhere. Ironically, jeans with those types of treatments come with a heavier price tag than a nice clean pair of blue jeans.

Shirts and hats from labels such as Abercrombie and Fitch come with their own “vintage” touch. It’s as if they’ve washed the shirt 100 times and gave it to a vicious dog with sharp claws.

There are other ways to get your hands on “real” vintage clothes and not from modern labels replicating it. Secondhand stores such as Salvation Army and other local thrift stores are great places. It takes a little time and persistence to find the perfect shirt. What makes up for the search is the price. Skipping out on that $5 lunch could be used to buy two t-shirts which last longer than a number two meal at your favorite fast food restaurant.

With vintage clothes you don’t have to worry about anyone else sporting the same outfit as you. They are unique, especially, because they are hard to find and often are not made anymore. The vintage fashion scene exists because of that uniqueness and will remain the “in” thing for a while.
