(February 23, 2004) -- After nearly 30 years of working as an attendance clerk, six of which were at Clark, Janet Curtis has retired. According to close friend and colleague senior administrative secretary Barbara Melone, Curtis’ double knee joint replacement surgery was one of many reasons for her departure, although there were other reasons leading up to it.

Curtis’ career as a Clerk III began in the mid ‘70s, where she started working for the district, then as an attendance clerk at Glendale High School and eventually became the senior attendance clerk there. Her dedication and passion for her job earned her Clark’s first Classified Employee of the Year award.

The woman generally remembered by most students as the kind lady in the office, Curtis is known by most parents as the “voice of Clark Magnet.” “She brought over 20 years of expertise in attendance and in dealing with parents and students,” said Melone. “One time I called the school and she recognized who I was. I was pretty shocked. It seems like she really knows all the students at Clark,” senior Cristina Frankian said.

Curtis’ future plans include working on becoming healthier and spending more time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Melone said that Curtis would like to come back to Clark as a substitute once she recovers and is 100% better. She also added that Curtis misses the students and her friends at Clark. No permanent replacement has been found yet to take Curtis’ place.

Melone, who calls Curtis to update her on the weekly happenings at Clark Magnet, said that she will miss seeing her in the office. “I’ve known her since 1987 at GHS. She was a great worker, very professional and always did her job well. Other attendance clerks looked up to her and would call her with any questions. She was a definite asset and will be missed.” A retirement reception will be held in March in her honor.
