(April 1, 2009)

-- On March 16, Glendale High School’s auditorium held the annual Scholastic Bowl. Hoover, Glendale, Crescenta Valley and Clark Magnet participated. Clark’s team, the only one without a senior, consisted of juniors Joseph Baar and Celia Burstein, and sophomores Saro Meguerdijian, Sayonika Mohanta and Caroline Tom. The competition was divided into two portions: an essay and questions. The question portion was hosted by KNBC weatherman Fritz Coleman and covered a variety of subjects.

Tom said that out of the approximate 75 questions asked, only three were similar to a packet of sample questions that the team studied. One question that CV answered had the panel of judges uncertain whether or not it was correct. They were awarded the point at the end of the Scholastic Bowl, winning the competition with a score of 87 and beating Glendale by one point. Hoover came in third place, followed by Clark with a score of 56.

"I felt like a chicken grilled over a fire," joked Meguerdijian. But that won’t stop them from trying next year. "If the entire team perseveres and pursues victory, it can be achieved," he said.

I think that if they got a new club leader (ex. Ms. McGrath, Mr. Doom, or Ms. Ngo) then they would actually have a chance. Everyone respects Ms. Newcomer, but I think she should stick to being the resource manager instead of Scholastic Bowl leader....
