(January 26, 2007) -- With her positions in various community organizations ranging from the Rotary Club of Glendale to Glendale Healthy Kids, volunteering has been second nature for Clark parent Elizabeth Manasserian. After her years of commitment to service and experience with business and finance, she decided to take her volunteer work to the next level by running for the Glendale Unified School District board member position.

As a mother of two sons attending Clark, Manasserian has served in the PTSA since her children started attending public schools and has held a variety of positions.  Through her experience as president of Wilson Middle School 's PTSA last year and current position as third vice president of Clark 's PTSA, she said she understands the importance of developing a strong parent and student relationship. “I want what is best for all the children in Glendale and the more students, parents, teachers and administrators get involved collectively, the better our schools will be,” Manasserian said.

She confirmed her entry into the campaign in early October and since then she has been meeting with community members to learn more about local concerns and gain additional suggestions. The filing period to finalize candidacy ended yesterday at 5:30 p.m. The actual elections will be held on April 3 and those elected to the board have the choice to serve up to a four-year term. While there are five board members in the district, there are only two open positions this year since the other three members will continue their term.

Being a member of the GUSD board entails a variety of responsibilities. Members meet every two weeks and work as a team to discuss issues and establish educational policies and goals for all schools throughout the district.

The teamwork environment the school board displays and their dedication to enhance GUSD schools are the main features that attract Manasserian to the position. “I’m a team player myself and I think my experiences and diverse background can help support the existing board,” Manasserian said.

According to Manasserian, she can contribute to the board by bringing in both her experience with community service and the business world. More importantly, she feels that her passion with kids and her membership in business organizations such as Glendale Board Realtor and Glendale Chamber of Commerce make her qualified for the job.

“If elected, I know I will face challenges,” Manasserian said. “However, I am willing to do whatever it takes to support the development of our schools.”

Another Clark parent, Greg Krikorian is a current School Board member and is currently running for a City Council position in the upcoming elections.
