Adam Schiff holds breakfast

Congressman Adam Schiff organized a breakfast bringing together the ethnic communities of Asians and Armenians at the San Gabriel Recreation Center. Schools attending included Marshall Academy in Pasadena and Crecsenta Valley, Daily, Hoover and Glendale High Schools, as well as Clark.

Senior Sona Karakashian and junior Tom Kang represented Clark at the breakfast. Before arriving at the center, students were scheduled to meet at Glendale Community College to receive information packets. The event began at 8:30 a.m. After a brief breakfast and a prayer said by an Armenian pastor, Schiff began to speak to a room of about 20 people.

Schiff encouraged students in the room to follow their dreams, just like he had.
“Meeting Adam Schiff was a great experience because he reminded me of myself,” Karakashian said. “He always wanted to go into medicine, but at the last minute decided to go into politics. I’m actually in the same position.”

After a quick introduction, each person in the room got a chance to speak about future plans. Beside students in attendance, GCC trustees Armine Hakopian and Vahe Paroumian; Council Member Raffi Manoukian; GCC teachers; and other government officials were also present.

“I think hearing other students my age and other people part of my community who wanted to do similar things in the future motivated and inspired me,” Karakashian said.

Clark places third in Scholastic Bowl

After four to five months of practice and preparation, seniors Michael Hennessey, Tasha Kahn, Nick Lee and Anahid Yahjian along with junior Christopher Mangaserian participated in the 17th annual Scholastic Bowl at 7 p.m. The event was held March 12 at the Glendale High School auditorium.

Though Clark placed third, the match was close throughout the competition. “It was very exciting,” advisor Susan Newcomer said. “We were neck and neck for first and second place most of the time.”

Robotics Team visits students at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School had some special guests for their Reading Night. Eight students from the Introduction to Engineering class, the Marine Biology Research class and Robotics team paid a visit to present their robots on Feb. 28. “We introduced to them the different kinds of robots. We explained what a robot was. Well, not me, the others did,” said junior Rayhan Yacub. The students talked to three different age groups about how to construct robots. The Introduction to Engineering class presented a robot that won third place in a Vex competition. The Marine Biology Research class showed off their purchased remote operated vehicle (ROV). Engineering and Robotics Club showed off two robots: a robot built in 2005 by the Robotics Team and another ROV built by Engineering Club.
