Dogs Look to Qualify for Playoffs

Last year the BHS baseball team placed fourth in the district, just missing out on a playoff spot and so this year, the team is hoping to qualify for the post-season.  This year’s baseball season started this past Monday with on opening game 13-1 trouncing of the Devine Warhorses.

This year’s baseball program has a number of new improvements, starting with a new head coach, Will Shahan.

“I like the new coach very much, I’ve got a lot of respect for him and I think we’re gonna get through a lot,” senior Kyle Monroe said.

Shahan, the Bulldogs former assistant coach, has taken over at head coach this year. With his new position, Coach Shahan is bringing a number of changes to the team, the biggest one being the introduction of RMA.

“RMA is ‘Right Mental Attitude’; it’s where you perform better on the field, in life, and in the classroom” Coach Shahan said.

Right mental attitude is a philosophy aimed at boosting the morale and confidence of the players. When a player has a confident mindset, or the ‘right mental attitude’, he is far more likely to succeed. Along with their new mindset, this year’s team is more optimistic than those in the past.

“All the kids love baseball, and they’re really eager to see success,” Coach Shahan said.

Along with a positive attitude, Shahan reports that the team is better conditioned than past pre-seasons. Senior Nick Palacios reported a better workout system, which involved a lot more running causing the team to be in better shape.

“There’s a lot of good chemistry,” Monroe said, “I’m very excited, I love baseball and I love the atmosphere.”

The whole team, including the coach, is working their hardest to beat their three main rivals, Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Wimberley. These three teams are also a threat because they were the three teams that placed higher that BHS in district finals last year.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Pleasanton Tourney this Thursday through Saturday and will return home for a non-district game versus Blanco next Monday at 7PM.
