Reindeer such as Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen are not what you would see in a high school hallway.
But recently, students in Mrs. Diane Brays’ Sculpture class created decorative reindeer that give a sense of Christmas spirit to all BHS students and staff. These life-size reindeers and Christmas trees line the front hallway and welcome visitors and students alike.
Like many who take Christmas decorating seriously, the students had to begin this project back in the fall. “I think we started four weeks ago," junior Robert Rodriguez said. "It took us three weeks to complete the reindeer and the tree design."
Ironically, the students used an unusual material to create these life-like forms. "The students each had eight pieces of ½' pink Styrofoam sheets," Bray said.
Some of those students involved in the project are hoping that participation will vault them onto Santa's "Nice List". “I would say I’m in between because I tend to pick on my sister a lot,” junior Rudy Fernandez said.
Rodriguez is hoping his participation will earn him an unusual present. "“I just want a chinchilla; I’ve always wanted one because they're cute and I want to take care of one.”
While most teenagers focus on the presents that they will receive for the holidays, one scultptor emphasized the holiday spirit instead. “Going to my different places and seeing people, is my favorite part of Christmas,” junior Jessica Preece said.
Each student got to individualize his or her creation and all embody the Christmas spirit. "“My deer was made with love," sophomore Matthew King said.
"My goal was to get the students involved in the season," Bray said.
