Once they were legalized by the FDA, in 1964, contraceptives were widely available in places like Planned Parenthood centers. These pills shown above were actually some of the first contraceptives available. -

The mission of Planned Parenthood is to provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings, which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual.

Planned Parenthood is a national organization consisting of resourceful clinics for people who need medical help.

The Roseville clinic, located at 729 Sunrise Boulevard, offers many different services such as reproductive health services, and general health care services.

Visitors can get STD and pregnancy testing, birth control, abortion services, emergency contraception, etc. They sell birth control such as “The Pill” and condoms to people of all ages. Physicals, immunizations, and pediatric and prenatal care are just some of the many general health services offered. According to an anonymous female Rocklin High School student, “Planned Parenthood has been a lifesaver for me. I was able to receive help in ways my parents would not allow. Planned Parenthood helped me help myself.”

Planned Parenthood is very popular with teenagers because items are sold at a very low price and everything is kept confidential. Unlike regular doctor visits, anything said, done, or bought is kept completely confidential unless otherwise specified by the patient. However, Planned Parenthood is a very controversial program for people of all ages. Many parents are fighting to have it shut down because it scares them that their children can receive birth control and testing without parental consent. Even President Bush is against Planned Parenthood and what they believe in.

Some parents though, agree with the mission statement of Planned Parenthood. Tamara Henry, mother of an 11th grade Rocklin High School student, said “I feel it’s better for kids to go to their own doctors who have known them longer and know their history. Although if there are reasons that they cant, I think they should have someplace to go for help and advice.”

Students also have mixed reviews. According to a female Rocklin High School senior, “I think Planned Parenthood is positive for the teens who are working to get back on track and help themselves, NOT for those who use it as an ‘out.’”

There are a number of seniors though, that are strongly against Planned Parenthood. From a survey taken of 79 Rocklin High School students, it was concluded that seven percent of students view Planned Parenthood as a negative addition to our society.

For example, a male RHS senior stated, “Encouraging birth control and abortion outside the knowledge of teen’s legal guardians perpetuates the climate of social decay so prevalent in our society.” Planned Parenthood is often associated with encouraging under-aged, unprotected sex.

From the survey taken of 52 Rocklin High School seniors, 47 think Planned Parenthood is a good resource, but only seven students have actually been to a Planned Parenthood clinic. Out of 27 sophomore students, only three have visited a clinic. Seven out of the ten students that have gone to a clinic have used at least one of the many positive resources Planned Parenthood has to offer.
