Students start to form the breast cancer awareness ribbon in the gym. - Katelyn Sellars
With pink shirts filling the Briar Woods High School store display and teens rushing around to purchase pink ducks, October brought out the pink in everyone.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Briar Woods staff and students went all out to make sure everyone got involved in awareness activities, and raised more than $1,200 for the cause.

The week of October 25 was filled with fundraisers and sales to earn money to donate to Susan G Komen for the Cure. Susan G. Komen is a foundation which raises money for breast cancer research and awareness. The foundation is one of the largest in the country.

"Each class will have a competition to see who had the most sold pink ducks by the end of the week,” said Heather VanDyke, a sponsor of Pink Week, and a marketing teacher at BWHS. "Competition drives sales, sales raise money for the cure."

According to VanDyke, the pink T-shirts which read, "Passionately Pink", throughout the week, while the ducks sold for three days and the bake sale was Friday of that week.
Briar Woods sold the T-shirts to other schools such as middle schools and little league football teams in order spread the awareness of breast cancer and raise more money for the Susan G. Komen foundation.

To celebrate an end to the week, students and staff dressed in pink and formed the breast cancer awareness ribbon in the gym as a tribute to those who have fought and who are fighting breast cancer.
