Attention Lake
Shore staff, why is it that, with all the years of having an annual talent
show-besides for last year- can we not have a performance to show off all the
unique and talented students of our high school? We deserve to school people
exactly what our students and peers have to offer, with our unique talents.
As the school year
comes to a close, there are many special events coming up that we as students
look forward to: prom, class night, graduation and senior year spring break.
But what about the students who aren’t graduating? Yes, we may have summer to
look forward to, but so does everyone else in the world. There isn’t a
‘special’ event for the underclassman. Wait, let me rephrase myself, there was
a special event, but that has come to a clear-cut close. This one event, where
the entire school comes together to spend the remaining days we have with each
other, and that allows us to learn new things about our peers, is the Lake
Shore talent show.
Lake Shore High School’s
counseling department secretary, Ms. Bates, concluded that we will not be
having a show this year because “the calendar is really tight” and “prom and
graduation are all in May.” However, that last statement really confuses me. If
the administration’s decision on crossing out this years talent show is because
of the ‘crazy’ time of year, involving prom and graduation, then how is it that
it has worked out previous years? Prom and graduation have always been in May
and each year its sidekick was the LSHS talent/fashion show.
Senior at Lake
Shore, Anne Brabant, feels that “there are a lot of talented students and I
don’t think it’s fair that they won’t get the chance to show the school.” I
couldn’t say it any better. Many students go unnoticed throughout their four
years of high school, and after they take their final walk across that
never-ending stage on June 6th, it’ll be too late. It’s sad that we won’t be
able to participate in the activity where we gather together for the last time
until we lose an unforgettable group of seniors. An activity filled with
laughs, amazement and surprises that kicks off the end of the year with a bang.
Not only are we
losing memories, but with the poor economy, why not raise a few extra bucks for
an enjoyable show? Lake Shore High School senior, Karley Dorner, made a great
point that not only is it“a tradition that should try to be kept going” but “it
could potentially raise money.” What a way to get more bang for your buck.
While you kick back to watch your fellow students strut their stuff and show
off their unique talents, you'd also be contributing to our school. Through all
the events such as charities, fundraising for trips and programs to help out
the community that Lake Shore students dedicated their time to, why not raise
some money to help out our own school?
However, on a
serious note, Lake Shore's talent show is something that is important, and
should keep going on as a tradition. It's an exciting event to create even more
memorable moments before summer hits and our seniors head off to college. It's
a bummer to see it cancelled this year and watch students’ five minutes in
spotlight fade away. It's a lights out to the Lake Shore talent show.
