Finally, the BCS was not BS, and got the teams in the bowl games that deserve it.
The main game features the No. 1 USC Trojans and No. 2 Texas Longhorns in the Rose Dowl in Pasadena, Calif.
The other three games are No. 3 Penn State Nittney Lions and No. 22 Florida State Seminoles, No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes and No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 11 West Virginia Mountaineers.
This year the Orange Bowl features Penn State and Florida State. Florida State comes in with an 8-4 record with big wins against Miami and Virginia Tech. Penn State has a 10-1 record with their only loss coming on a touchdown inside one minute against Michigan.
The biggest match up in this game is head coaches Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden. These two coaches have a combined 712 wins. Paterno has won 20 bowl games for the Lions and Bowden has won 19 for the Seminoles.
The Penn State defense, led by Tamba Hali, could cause problems for the Florida State offense. The Seminoles quarterback, Drew Weatherford, has already struggled throwing 17 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The key for Florida State in this game is winning the turnover battle. If Penn State can protect the ball, they should be able to control the game.
Nokia Sugar will host the SEC champs, Georgia Bulldogs, against the Big East champs, West Virginia Mountaineers. This bowl game will feature playmakers DJ Shockley and Steve Slaton.
Shockley will lead the bulldogs into the game after having had a big game against a high-powered LSU Tigers.
This season he has thrown for 2,311 yards and 21 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
West Virginia, which most people don’t think they deserve the bowl game, will be led by running back Steve Slaton who is only a freshman.
He had 924 yards and 14 TD’s, but he averaged 5.2 yards per carry. This game will probably be a blowout if Georgia plays at their best. The only chance that the Mountaineers have is if their defense can step it up and stop Shockley from picking apart their secondary and running free.
They also have to control the ball and make sure that they don’t turn the ball over. They must take chances in the games and make big plays, and hope that the freshman doesn’t choke under all the pressure.
The Fiesta Bowl is one of the most anticipated bowls this year. It matches up Ohio State with Notre Dame. New coach, Charlie Weis, led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 9-2 record this season.
Quarterback Brady Quinn and the Irish offense are ranked sixth in the country. Quinn threw 32 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.
He will be going up against linebacker A.J. Hawk and the seventh-ranked Ohio State defense. The Buckeyes are 4-3 against ranked teams this year including a close loss to No. 2 Texas.
Notre Dame had impressive wins at Michigan and Pittsburgh. One of their losses came at home to the No. 1 USC Trojans on a last second touchdown. The key to this game will be how Brady Quinn takes the pressure of the tough Ohio State defense.
If Notre Dame wants to win, they have to get the passing game going and hope to put up points early. Ohio State has to control the ball on offense and not let this game get into a shootout. They will need big plays on defense if they want to win. This game will most likely be decided in the fourth quarter.
The National Championship has a chance to be a good game or a complete blowout. Both teams have high-powered offenses and good defenses. Both have played close games and both come in undefeated. Texas was able to squeak by the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes, 25-22.
USC also has had close games against No. 6 Notre Dame, 34-31, and Fresno State, 50-42. Texas just came off a huge win over CU, 70-3.
Also, USC beat a good UCLA team, 66-19. In this game, USC might be the favorite as they try to three-peat as national champs.
They also have the returning Heisman Matt Leinart and the new Heisman, Reggie Bush. Texas has one of the most athletic QB’s in the nation, Vince Young, and also has a very athletic defense. USC might have problems on defense stopping Vince Young because they haven’t faced anybody that talented this year. Also, USC has shown that their defense can give up points and they have not faced an offense like this.
Both teams are vulnerable in the secondary meaning there will be a big play possibility, and no team will be out of the game until the fourth quarter is done.
