Finally the girls of Kittie have come out with a spanking new CD, “Until the End.” During the two years in between albums, I was very eager for this album to arrive.
The band recorded their new CD in March in a Massachusetts recording studio. Morgan Lander, lead vocalist, described “Burning Bridges” on her Web site as “the heaviest song on this album,” and “that it “combines a huge melodic chorus.”
Morgan, like many lyricists, derives her ideas for her songs from personal experiences.
“Situations, relationships, human nature and our emotional and physical struggle just to get by and be heard,” she says. “Musically, I think what keeps us going is knowing that there are people out there who really love and appreciate what we are doing. That gives us the desire to continue on, no matter the obstacle.”
Six of the tracks were written before their last summer U.S. tour and the band was able to try them out live as they ventured across the country.
From the new CD, my favorite songs are “In Dreams” and their newest single, “Into the Darkness.” Even though it has been years since my pop days, those songs remind me of those good old days. Two other songs that really intrigue my ears are “Look So Pretty” and “Career Suicide.” Off the whole album, “Look So Pretty” has the best lyrics: “You look so pretty, digging your grave. You look so pretty, what’s left to save.”
Now to add to their awesome music, there is a new girl in the mix. Lisa Marx, the now permanent second guitarist is formerly from the band To See You Broken. She will be joining Jennifer Arroyo and sisters Morgan and Mercedes Lander.
While working on “Until the End”, they started looking for a new guitarist. When they met Marx at a Seattle-area Kittie show, she was invited along with the other musicians to “jam” with the girls. Former “guitar tech gone guitarist,” Jeff Phillips is now pursuing a band of his own, Thine Eyes Bleed.
“Lisa brings a wide-eye excitement that really shows this is all she has ever wanted to do,” Morgan said. “She has been playing piano and guitar for years, and has tons of touring experience. She’s the kind of person who isn’t going to back down or quit.”
“I knew she was the one because she was very down to earth, friendly and was a really solid player,” bassist Arroyo said on the Kittie website.
“So far, being in the band is so amazing,” Marx said. “I’m really excited I’ve been given this opportunity, and can’t wait to rock the world!”
Kittie is one of the best girl rock groups ever. With Morgan’s magnificent voice on lead, the band is able to stun most of the male rockers. While at times, her vocal range equals that of a man’s, she also has the ability to tone it down and sound like a little innocent girl.
Kittie’s unique sound and awesome new album only prove that they are in it for the long run.
