We have now started our countdown to the greatest male and female athlete to come through Lamar in the last 50 years. The votes are in and here is No. 5.

• Wendy Hartman

Wendy Hartman graduated in 1987 from Lamar High School. She ran cross country and track and played basketball. As a junior, she was part of a girls 800-meter medley relay that placed sixth in the state with a school record time of 1:51.

Individually, Hartman placed third in the 400-meter run. Her senior year the girls cross country team took sixth overall in State. Hartman led the way placing No. 15 individually.

In basketball, she led the Savages to a second place finish, while Hartman received All-State honors. In track, she set a school record that still stands today with a state winning time of 2:21 in the 800-meter run.

“She was just tough,” former mens track coach Joe Mundell said. “She was one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen come through here.”

• John Hartshorn

John Hartshorn graduated from Lamar in 1969 and competed in football, basketball and golf. In his senior year, he was the starting quarterback for the football team while earning all-conference honors. He also made all-conference in basketball.

In golf, he made it to State twice in his four-year career. His high school success carried on to college as he played four years of football and golf and two years of basketball. After college he spent time at the Denver Bronco’s training camp.
