Roseville High School’s students will begin Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) testing tomorrow. The testing will then continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next two weeks. All freshman, sophomores and juniors will be tested in the science, English, math and social studies areas. The tests will determine whether RHS students meet the California standards. Students that score high on their STAR tests will have a chance to be awarded with certificates or gold seals.

In addition, the juniors have a chance to participate in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) by completing an extra section in their math and English STAR tests.

“The juniors have to score high in this part for the placement test for college work in math and English," said math teacher Martha Ogness.

While the sophomores and juniors take the STAR exam, freshmen are required to take a similar exam to the exit exam this year.

“The district has made a test similar to the CAHSEE,” said Ogness. “The freshmen will take it while everyone else takes their social studies part of the STAR. It is technically not part of the STAR and will be on a separate answer sheet and will be graded here and used to identify students who need extra help preparing for the CAHSEE.”

Junior Lexi Inck feels that every student should take the STAR test seriously.

"I think it’s sad that a lot of students don't really try to score well on the STAR test because it doesn't count to some students," said Inck.

However, junior Gabriella Gonzales feels that taking the tests takes longer than necessary.

"STAR tests are much too long and drawn out," said junior Gonzales. "The attention of the testing though is good because the school tries to find out who is doing well and who needs extra help, but it’s annoying how we have to take them every year and they're really hard."

The counselors will now record the results of STAR testing scores of every student onto their transcripts.

“It could affect the next year classes for students that won't score well on the STAR test," said Ogness.

When the results are released in August, RHS will provide help for students that do not meet the standards. In addition, counselors will also meet up with students who achieved a good test score, but have difficulties succeeding in school.

“Roseville High will try everything to help our students to score better and we will support them in every way," said counselor Michael Brockman.

For students that have to make up the STAR testing due to absence, the make up day is May 3.
