Parking at Roseville High School has become more of an issue recently and students have been receiving parking tickets for parking illegally on or near campus.

“The most common one is failure to park in a marked space,” said school resource officer Greg Lieberman.

In addition to not parking in a designated space, students have been parking near the baseball fields, in residential areas around the school, and in handicapped spaces. There have been some issues with ADA (American Disability Act) accessibility because of handicapped spaces being taken by students who do not need them.

Also, students who have ROP and come in late cannot find a student parking space due to school gates being already locked. This leads some students to park along the streets by RHS. However, some of the streets, such as Los Flores, are permit parking only and people have gotten tickets for parking there.

Along with the permit violation, there have been complaints from neighbors about students blocking their driveways. There were two such complaints in the last month and the cars could have been towed, but were not.

The fine amounts vary according to the violation. Failure to park in a designated space is $25 the first time and doubles each time after that. Students found parking in a disabled parking space would be fined $380.

Senior Erin Imoto feels the parking rules need to be clearer, so students would not be continuously fined.

“Part of my car was in the fire lane,” said Imoto. “I feel like the school needs to clarify and redo the parking lot lines if they’re going to ticket us and give us more parking spaces.”

Senior Beau Smith has also received a parking ticket and feels that it was not necessary.

“They said I was parked in an unmarked area,” said Smith. “There’s no sign saying that it was unmarked.”

According to Lieberman, the concern with parking by the baseball fields is that if someone gets injured in that area, ambulances and fire trucks would not be able to get through. There used to be bollards to block access to the fields, but due to cars running into them, they have been damaged. Temporary gates were put up, but students have either run the gates over or moved them out of the way. According to Lieberman, parking problems gets worse over the course of the year because more kids are able to drive, and when they are new drivers, they cannot carpool, so they each have to bring their own car.

“I know it’s inconvenient, but we have to make sure that people are safe,” said Lieberman.
