This fall has been exciting for many of our varsity sports teams that have been having outstanding seasons.

Girls’ Soccer

Our varsity girls’ soccer team is doing extremely well this year. For the first time in Cresskill history, they have made it to the state sectional finals and, with a record of 10-8, played their third playoff game against Kinnelon last Thursday, November 9th. The team is thriving under the leadership of senior captains Megan Thomas, Kim Hasenstab, and Michelle Hartmann, and Megan was also chosen as “Athlete of the Week” by the Bergen Record. She is the first soccer player from Cresskill High School to receive this prestigious award.

Boys’ Soccer

Senior captains Jon Olmo and John Burkart led the tenacious varsity boys’ soccer team, finishing the season with a record of 10-7-1. Several of the players received all-league honors; Ian Oates and John Burkart made it into the 1st team, Jon Olmo and Ian Lubinski were in the 2nd team, and senior Fernando Gonzales received Honorable Mention. The team made it to the state sectional semi-finals, but lost against Midland Park last Tuesday, November 7. On a brighter note, Coach Giannantonio was named BCSL Coach of the Year.

Football

After they lost their first two games against Palisades Park and Bogota, no one thought that Cresskill’s football team would have a very successful season. However, led by key players George Pecoraro ‘07, Kyle Wengerter ‘08, Joe Knight ’07, Kyle Elliott ’08, and Jason Lee ’07, they have worked hard to come back from these losses with a record of 6-2 and a six-game winning streak before facing Bogota for a second time last Saturday, November 11th.

Girls’ Cross Country

The girls’ cross country team, led by seniors Nicole Barretta, Mai Sameshima, and Juliana Huber, finished their season on Saturday, November 11th with a record of 3-3. The girls placed 2nd in the BCSL Olympic League meet, 3rd in the county group D meet, and 4th in the state-sectional meet.

Boys’ Cross Country

Led by senior captain Chris Lee, the boys’ cross country team finished with a record of 2-4. One of their chief accomplishments this season was sophomore Eric Han’s placing 5th in the county group D meet, and qualifying for the county Meet of Champions.

Volleyball

The volleyball team, led by seniors Anissa Whitney, Tiana Pappas, Cara Kurth, Lindsey DeCarlo, and Kaitlyn Rosa, finished an amazing season with a record of 16-8. They qualified for the state quarterfinal match, but were stopped short there by Midland Park.
